Review: The New Art of Capturing Love (5 of 5 stars)

The New Art of Capturing Love by Kathryn Hamm and Thea Dodd

In this day and age, wedding photography is not exactly a new industry. While there is room for creative expression, there are already multitudes of books devoted to giving wedding photographers suggestions regarding poses that can be used for the happy couple, with or without their wedding parties. With many states legalization of gay and lesbian weddings within the last decade, and the rising trend of single sex commitment ceremonies in those states that have yet to legalize it, the clientele in need of wedding photographers is shifting. ‘The New Art of Capturing Love’ is a great book both for photographers interested in expanding their business to this market as well as couples that are looking for help with a wedding-planning vision.

‘The New Art of Capturing Love’ is filled, from cover-to-cover, with beautiful pictures of same-sex couples celebrating their special day, as well as helpful information and tips on how to use these ideas to create poignant photographs of your own. It offers advice on how to change your vocabulary regarding a wedding (“Wedding party” vs “Bridal Party,” for example), how to set up a photograph where the two main focusses are the same height, or wearing similar outfits, and how to take a meaningful photograph that still showcases the idea that this in not your typical heterosexual couple.

The New Art of Capturing Love‘ is a must-read for anyone interested in photographing or planning homosexual weddings, as well as those that simply like to view beautiful pictures of same-sex weddings.
