I stumbled upon a random topic generator, courtesy of another wordpress blog. I’m kind of curious where it gets its ideas, because some of the suggestions are rather out there (best brands of suitcases, for example). That being said, the very first topic it suggested for me was “your favorite dinosaur.” Which was actually kind of perfect, because I have a favorite dinosaur and a lot of thoughts on the matter. My first thought, though, was “How many people (people over the age of 5) have a favorite dinosaur??” Are there really a lot of people who have a strong opinion on the matter? I mean, I worked in a science museum for six and a half years, giving presentations about things like dinosaurs and outer space. It would be weird if I didn’t have an opinion, but normal people? Most normal people I know would just say… “Um… T-Rex was cool.” Often because T-Rex was the only dinosaur they could think of (and they often couldn’t tell you what the ‘T’ stood for in T-Rex). That out of the way, I do have a favorite dinosaur, and I am going to share it with you now.
My favorite dinosaur is one called Ankylosaurus.
It lived in the late Cretaceous period (about 68-66 million years ago). It lived around what is now Wyoming, Montana, and Alberta, Canada. It was an herbivore – meaning it ate only meat.
Why is it my favorite, you are probably asking. This dino is cool because it was covered in an armor-like plating. It went all down it’s back and the top of it’s tail, and they think that smaller plates may have covered the legs and underside of the tale. The coolest thing, however, was its tail. The Ankylosaurus had a club at the end of its tail, that paleontologists think it would use to defend itself. The club was so strong that they think it could break bones.
How could you not think that was cool??
